Trevor Lawrence Still Adjusting to Nature of Red-Zone Offense in NFL

Few players enter the NFL with as much hype as that surrounding Trevor Lawrence. The quarterback from Clemson is rated as one of the best draft prospects the league has seen in years.

Unsurprisingly chosen as the #1 overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Lawrence is seen as the man to take the Florida-based franchise to the promised land. 

With his skill set and intangibles, the sky is the limit for the QB. But having dreams of winning a Super Bowl right off the bat might be something Jacksonville fans will have to put on hold. 

Adjusting to his new surroundings, the quarterback is bound to have growing pains in his rookie season. While the college football circuit is as competitive as it has ever been, the NFL still remains a different ball game. 

Trevor Lawrence still adapting to a new offense  

Talking to media during the Jaguars OTAs, franchise Head Coach Urban Meyer highlighted how the QB has had a rocky start so far. 

“He had a great day yesterday. OK day today,” Meyer said. The head coach believes that a big reason for Lawrence’s early struggles are down to him getting used to the NFL-style red zone offense.

“Big reason was red zone emphasis. The field changes especially against NFL talent all over the field,” Meyer explained.

Meyer though was quick to defend his rookie QB by saying that it wasn’t just down to Lawrence that the offense faltered.

“The defense had the upper hand today, it wasn’t just him. Just new area of the field, which is why you spend so much time down there practicing — completely different game. Very accurate yesterday. Today… we all struggled, not just him offensively.”

Meyer further added that the team has been monitoring Lawrence’s every throw to make sure they make the adjustments needed to help him flourish.

“They monitor every throw and if there’s anything they have to adjust, they will. It’s been full-speed ahead since the last two practices… He’s not getting overused right now. An hour and a half practice you just don’t really get enough throws,”  he added.

Expecting Trevor Lawrence to waltz in and walk the league would be a silly thing to do. After all, this is a side that won just one game last season.

With a new head coach and an influx of fresh faces, the Jaguars are a franchise in rebuild mode. But with some patience, it’ll only be a matter of time before Lawrence makes the Jaguars serial title contenders.
