Alfa Romeo Boss Refuses to Rule Out an Executive F1 Role at Mercedes or Renault

Frédéric Vasseur is the man in charge of the Alfa Romeo Formula One team. The French team principal also eyes an executive role in rival team, Mercedes. Vasseur stated the importance of having connections in the paddock since they spend a lot of time with each other during an F1 season.

Vasseur also points out the new regulations that will come into effect in 2022 will play a key role in his decision to leave. He stated if he builds something solid for the team he believes he can have a change of team environment such as the Silver Arrows. He has even considered going back to Renault, where he was the team principal for one season.

Frédéric Vasseur eyes an opportunity at Mercedes

As quoted by Motorsport.com, Vasseur was asked about previous rumours linking him to Renault and Mercedes. Admitting he won’t deny such an opportunity, he replied –

“Having contact is essential for life in F1. When journalists ask me “Have you talked to other riders?”, I answer “Obviously yes!”. We spend our lives together, flights, hotels, paddocks, we see each other almost everywhere.”

He added, “It is important to build something, and I think that with Alfa Romeo Racing and Orlen I have the opportunity to do so. The next 24 months will be crucial because the challenge linked to the new regulation awaits us and we will have to renew the agreement with the sponsor. And if I can build something solid, I see no reasons that can lead me to change,” Vasseur concluded. (Translated from Italian via Google)

How’s Alfa Romeo doing so far this season?

The Swiss-based team seemed to be struggling ever since the season kicked off in Bahrain back in March. The team have retained their drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi for this year’s championship, but things haven’t panned out the way they thought it would.

Alfa Romeo currently sits in eighth place with just a single point to their name in the constructor’s standings. Alongside their backpackers of the grid Williams and Haas who have failed to score any points till now this season.

In terms of driver’s standings, Giovanazzi sees himself in 15th place with just one point, which he earned at the Monaco GP by coming 10th in the race. While the 2008 world champion has yet to score a single point this season. The team hopes they can do better in the upcoming race at Baku at the start of June.
