Jorge Linares might not hold a world title at this stage, but his relevance in the championship ride might be troublesome for several contenders.
The 35-year-old Venezuelan boxer has appeared in 52 fights across almost 2 decades. Hence, his sheer experience is one lethal aspect to put him in a top-tier position.
While he could roar as an undefeated prodigy for 7 years, the multi-weight champion suffered a few losses from that point. It doesn’t put a dent on his glittery 47-5 professional record. But all 5 of those losses have come via stoppage and his oppositions often take a blueprint to prepare from those battles.

Jorge Linares- The undefeated champion falls
Boasting of the WBA 130lbs title and a 27-0 record, Juan Carlos Salgado handed Linares his maiden defeat in 2009. It was a shocking loss to experience. The 12-round main event was ticked off in the first round as Linares fell prey to Salgado’s dominance.
After aiming towards Linares’ body, Salgado dropped the Venezuelan with a left hook. Although Linares went back up, Salgado rushed himself into putting on a one-sided dominance. And the referee stepped in to call off the fight.
Antonio De Marco vs Jorge Linares- Lightweight title on the line
‘El Nino de Oro’ returned to the win column from his sole career loss by staging 4 consecutive wins. He then went straight for the WBC 135lbs belt, which was vacant at that stage. Linares showed extreme caliber in the fight, but couldn’t claim the win.
He competed against Mexican boxer Antonio De Marco and had several up-rising moments in the clash. Linares could have won the fight. He was pushed to the corner many times but kept coming back until De Marco landed flush on Round 11 to stop the fight. 31-2, Linares failed to grab the world lightweight title.

Just after 5 months from the defeat against Marco, Linares returned against Sergio Thompson in a non-title collision. But he was doomed to deal with yet another defeat. The fight could have been a long-lasting thriller, but Thompson had an easy night.
‘YeYo’ dropped Jorge Linares in Round 2 and handed a brutal injury to the Venezuelan’s left eye. Linares had a severe cut on his eyelid and the referee waved off the fight. Hence, it was 31-3 now on Jorge Linares’s scoreboard.
‘The Matrix Show’ stopped another streak
Jorge Linares resurrected his dominance after his back-to-back losses in 2012. He staged another dominant run of 13 straight wins for 6 years and appeared invincible at the 135lbs roster. Starting from Anthony Crolla (2X), Luke Campbell, and many other elites, Linares beat them all.
However, Vasyl Lomachenko blemished his attempt at the lightweight world title, when they collided in 2018. Linares challenged ‘The Matrix’ for the WBA strap and looked absolutely promising.
The intriguing collision saw Linares drop ‘Loma’ in Round 6. However, the Ukrainian returned the favor by dropping Linares in Round 10 and ultimately TKOed him to retain the championship.
Jorge Linares vs Pablo Cesar Cano
Following the loss to Lomachenko, Linares knocked out Abner Cotto in 2018 and went silent for a brief period. He returned to action against Pablo Cesar Cano in 2019, in a super lightweight showdown for the WBC (International) silver belt.
However, Linares suffered a humiliating loss in the first round of the 12-rounds headliner. Mexican boxer Cano dropped him 3 times, and it was a lopsided beat down. No wonder it was closed off and Linares was handed his fifth career loss.
Nevertheless, the 35-year-old boxer has added 2 more wins since the final defeat and is looking for another title shot at the lightweight gold.
