Viewers of The Diana Interview: The Truth Behind the Scandal were left shocked at new revelations about Martin Bashir allegedly creating lies about Princess Diana’s closest friends to isolate her.

The documentary, which aired on Channel 4 on Saturday night, claimed that the journalist had systematically lied and forged documents to make Diana believe that she couldn’t trust the people in her inner circle in order to get her to agree to do an interview with him.

The documentary focused on the ’32 lies’ Earl Spencer had kept records of, which he claims Martin had created to instil doubt in Diana’s mind about the intentions of those around her.

As well as claiming that her aide was being paid to feed information about her to MI5 agents, Martin is said to have fabricated claims that Prince William and Prince Harry’s nanny, Tiggy Legge-Bouke, was having an affair with Prince Charles.

The claims even went so far as alleging the Prince Charles had bought Prince William a watch with a recording device in it to pick up conversations his mother was having.

The interview Martin conducted with Princess Diana on Panorama was the focus of the recent Dyson Report, which found that he had used ‘deceitful behaviour’ to secure the bombshell 1995 exclusive sit-down chat with the Princess of Wales.

He has maintained that Diana was never unhappy about the content of the interview and said they continued to be friends after the broadcast.

Martin has refuted the claims he did anything wrong, telling the Sunday Times: ‘I never wanted to harm Diana in any way and I don’t believe we did.

‘Everything we did in terms of the interview was as she wanted, from when she wanted to alert the palace, to when it was broadcast, to its contents … My family and I loved her.’

Viewers shared their shock at hearing the extent of the alleged lies in the new documentary, tweeting: ‘Just watching “The truth behind the scandal” about the Diana interview. Shocking all the lies that Martin Bashir told about so many of her friends and employees. It makes him sound a bit mad but he has ruined so many lives in the process.’

Others added that the journalist and the BBC should be held accountable for the deception used to secure the interview 25 years earlier.
