Chantelle Cameron Destroys Veteran Melissa Hernandez to Defend Her WBC Super-Lightweight Title

Chantelle Cameron has successfully defended her WBC super-lightweight champion. The 30-year-old extended her unbeaten record to 14-0 with a fantastic fifth-round TKO of veteran Melissa Hernandez. Here’s how it all went down.

Cameron and Hernandez fought as the co-main event of the exciting Devin Haney vs. Jorge Linares undercard. The British champion came into the bout as the firm favorite as the defending champion, against the aging Hernandez. However, ‘The Shark’ said she would shock the world.

How did the Chantelle Cameron vs. Melissa Hernandez fight pan out?

The 30-year-old champion came out all guns blazing and was the aggressor from the first belt. She hurt her opponent with the first few punches and kept the pressure throughout the first round. This continued in the second round too, as Cameron used her height and reach to keep her opponent on the back foot.

Nothing changed in the third round either. The 14-0 boxer found her rhythm and kept hurting Hernandez throughout the round. However, the fourth round brought the biggest moment in the fight. The British champion stepped on the gas and landed a barrage of punches and sent Hernandez crashing to the ground.

The WBC champion then tried to close the show by throwing everything but the kitchen sink. However, she couldn’t get the 41-year-old veteran out in the fourth.

How did the fight end?

Cameron came into the fifth round with only one objective. She had to close the show as soon as possible. Moreover, the referee had warned Hernandez and her team in between rounds that he would stop the fight if she continued to take damage.

However, the fifth round was fairly subdued when compared to the previous four. Despite this, Cameron continued her domination over the veteran. Ultimately, the referee saw enough and stopped the contest, giving the Brit a deserved TKO victory.

Although the stoppage was no surprise, the timing of it drew boos from the crowd and will draw more criticism after the fight. The referee stopped it at a point where Cameron was not throwing a flurry of punches and Hernandez was comfortable. Thus, it seemed unfair to stop Hernandez at that point. However, Cameron will have no complaints and will enjoy another TKO victory.
