Report: Andy Cowell’s Right Hand Man Among 6 More Mercedes Engineers Snatched By Red Bull

Without a doubt, the Red Bull team are serious about challenging Mercedes for the title. This explains why the Austrian team are resorting to recruit a number of specialists, especially from the Mercedes team. Most of these employees have been working in the racing engine construction department. Among the new recruits is Andy Cowell’s highest ranking engineer.

According to reports, Red Bull plan to build a factory by 2022. The idea is for Red Bull to build its own engines from 2025. This would definitely tide the team over until a new manufacturer decided to come knocking. Needless to say, the 4-time champions would happily welcome them with open arms.

The latest rumors say that the Austrian team have drafted in six more Mercedes staff including the engineer. According to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, they expect at least 50 more employees before they finish.

What does this mean for Red Bull?

Admittedly, this is not the first time that the outfit have snapped up a key Mercedes team member. Apparently, the team roped in Mercedes’ head of mechanical engineering, Ben Hodgkinson. His primary role is to lead the newly developed power train’s division.

Admittedly, Hodgkinson’s departure has left the German giants reeling a little bit. This is largely because no one from Mercedes have ever jumped ship to join other rival teams in almost a decade. It also does not help matters that the Austrian team have even offered some enticing prospects.

Most of the new recruits will be heading to Brixworth, which houses the engine department. Meanwhile the Brackley factory houses the bodywork department. While both factories are important, the various absences at Brixworth will definitely hurt the team. For now, both outfits are focusing on the current Formula One season before they can actually turn their thoughts to 2022 and beyond.
