Jordan Spieth Reflects on Losing to Jason Kokrak at Charles Schwab Challenge

Jordan Spieth enjoyed playing at the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge. Spieth, a Texas native, is always a fan favorite at the Colonial Country Club at Forth Worth. He had a real chance of winning his second career title at the venue, but Jason Kokrak came in and spoiled the party. 

Spieth and Kokrak were paired together in the final two rounds since their names were atop the leaderboard. The latter trailed Spieth by one stroke heading into Round 4 but emerged as the champion when the tournament concluded on Sunday. 

Jordan Spieth found trouble late in Round 4 as he bogeyed the 15th and 18th holes which gave Kokrak a glimpse of hope. Following the bitter loss, Spieth was asked to reflect on his feelings about losing the tournament by a two-stroke deficit.

“Some people get towards the lead and you watch them kind of back off and he seemed to be aggressive toward the ball. Drove the ball incredibly around this place and he’s always been somebody that when he’s toward the lead, he’s going to step on the gas more than tap the brakes and that’s what he did,” Spieth said about Kokrak. 

Jason Kokrak brilliantly capitalized on the front nine in the final round. He began with a bogey on the par-5 1st but was tied for the lead heading into the back nine after making birdies on the 5th, 6th, and 8th holes.

Jordan Spieth was the fan favorite at the 2021 Charles Schwab Challenge. He’s always the favorite wherever he plays in Texas and that was the case at Fort Worth as well. Having the crowd’s backing can be helpful at times, but it can also add more pressure during crunch moments. 

Spieth uncharacteristically crumbled in the final round and shot a 3-over 73. He committed five bogeys which largely contributed to his downfall. Following the loss, Spieth was asked if the fans played any part in adding pressure on his mind. 

“The support is fantastic but I don’t — I don’t feel extra pressure over here. I kind of feel it more at the Byron. I don’t know, just something about coming to a different city. The support is just as good. I mean, it’s incredible. But yeah, I had no excuses there. I just played poorly,” Spieth mentioned. 

Of course, he didn’t win, but Jordan Spieth can take away a lot of positives from his runner-up finish at Fort Worth. Spieth now has eight Top 10 finishes this season, which is one more than what he achieved in the last two seasons combined!
