Lando Norris Admits to Feeling ‘Half Confident, Half Nervous’ Heading Into the Azerbaijan GP

Lando Norris has started the 2021 campaign on a seriously impressive note. With a P3 finish in Monaco, Norris heads to Baku with a lot of confidence. However, he admits that the confidence will slightly be diluted due to the fact that the MCL35-M may not be best suited to the track in Azerbaijan.

RacingNews365 quoted him saying, (translated via Google), “I’m confident for certain tracks because of this result, places like Singapore, for example. Tracks that are more like Barcelona, I’m a bit more nervous about.

“Baku I guess I can be half-confident, half-nervous. Mixed feelings, but I’m confident we’re doing a good job, but we just need to keep it up and keep improving.”

Norris is certainly doing a fine job in his third year with the papaya colored outfit. His development in each season has been something to marvel at. Lando currently sits 3rd in the Drivers’ championship table, ahead of Mercedes man Valtteri Bottas. He also has two podiums to his name.

The 21-year-old will be keen to improve his record in Baku. Although he has only raced there once, in 2019, Norris crossed the finish line in P8 back then. This time around he’ll be aiming for a top-6 finish at least. And best on current form, that should be achievable. The only race he finished outside the top 6 was in Barcelona.

Lando Norris reflects on Barcelona race

As mentioned earlier, Norris wasn’t very confident in Spain. He goes on to explain why that was the case.

He said, “I think Barcelona was the only, not worry, but I guess we can’t be super confident with everywhere we go.

“It was just a different story, we set up the car very differently, we didn’t know what the car was going to be like, just because it’s slower speed we thought we’d struggle a bit more – and in Barcelona we struggled in the slower speeds.”

Luckily for the Briton, the track in Baku is very different to the one in Barcelona. In fact, his former teammate Carlos Sainz believes that it’s a track where McLaren can get a lot of joy.

Either way, Norris’ performances have given McLaren a good shot at ending the season as the best of the rest. Will he continue his hot-streak in Baku? We shall soon find out.
