Matthew McConaughey hits out at anti-maskers: ‘I’m not believing you’re really scared of this little cotton thing’
Matthew McConaughey has tackled anti-maskers’ beliefs in an interview, urging them to mask up and ‘take one for the team’.
Sharing his annoyance over ‘the damn dispute’ and how it ‘got politicised’, the Hollywood actor, who is considering a run for Governor of Texas, hit out at people who claim masks damage their ‘identity’ and ‘freedom’.
Talking on The Carlos Watson Show, Matthew showed passion in his mission to unify people and encourage them to show in their actions that they ‘value’ human life.
Discussing issues that had caused deep divides, as well as the obsession people have with immediate results, the Dallas Buyers Club star turned to the debate over wearing protective masks that raged during the pandemic.
‘We’ve got to make some sacrifices for larger rewards tomorrow’, he explained, before going on to discuss the dispute.
He continued: ‘Come on, man. I’m not believing you’re really scared of this little cotton thing.
‘And I’m not believing you really feel that takes away your identity and your freedom.
‘This is a short-term inconvenience for long-term freedom.’
He also spoke out about how there was ‘no data’ that suggested ‘it’s not a good thing’ or ‘harmful’ to wear a mask.
‘Let’s all take one for the team here.’
Earlier in the interview, the Magic Mike and Interstellar star had also touched on his own motivations for toying with a political career, as he described himself as being ‘interested in building something that can last’.
He explained: ‘I’m not interested in going and putting a bunch of band-aids on that are going to be ripped off as soon as I’m out – I’m interested in building something that can last, and I’m measuring what category that is.
‘I don’t know if that’s politics.’
In March, Matthew told Jimmy Fallon that the role of governor was something he was ‘absolutely’ giving ‘consideration’, although it had gone ‘no further than that right now’.
Current Texas governor Greg Abbott is up for re-election in 2022, so there’s still time for the star to commit to a campaign.
But even if he’s not ready to jump head-first into the world of politics just yet, it seems the ‘McConaissance’ is likely to remain politically-flavoured for the foreseeable.
