SAS: Who Dares Wins viewers witnessed one of the toughest challenges yet in Sunday’s episode, after the remaining recruits were tear gassed in a brutal trial.
The contestants faced a series first after being exposed to the chemical weapon in testing scenes.
The Special Forces soldiers explained how CS gas was a very real threat on military operations, and stressed the importance of being able to act under the most testing circumstances.
Speaking about his own experiences, directing staff Billy Billingham said: ‘CS gas is like a multitude of attacks on your respiratory system. It creates panic, it creates mayhem.
‘It’s like being suffocated. For me personally the first time the respirator came off, I was coughing and spluttering, my eyes were running, my ears were stinging and I felt like I was dying. I literally felt like he was going to die.’
It then came to Iraq veteran DS Melvyn Downes to brief the recruits: ‘It’s very important that you, as an SAS operator, see what the gas does to you. Has anyone been gassed before?’
‘It’s not very nice to tell you the truth. So what we’re going to do today, you’re having a taste of tear gas. Have faith in your partners. Do not panic.’
The drill saw the recruits sorted into pairs before entering a gas-filled cabin. After removing their respirators they were told to recite their name and recruit numbers, before safely extracting a hostage.
As soon as the masks were removed, the contestants struggled to breathe. They choked and shouted in pain as they attempted to carry out the task.
Jamie and Phoebe were the first pair up and collapsed onto the ground as they recovered following an impressive effort.
Next were Lauren and Adam, who struggled much more with the extreme conditions. Lauren was unable to help her partner complete the task, while Adam dropped his mask inside the cabin.
The task left some viewers shocked and taken aback by the gruelling scenes.
‘That CS gas looks and sounds horrific. It’s a no from me!’ one wrote.
‘The CS gas test looks absolutely grim!’ another said.
The same episode also saw recruit Adam open up about his life before joining the show, revealing that he was handed a five-year jail sentence for dealing drugs.
Speaking about his experiences with crime, he said: ‘Around 16 or 17 I started getting involved. We were doing some drug drop offs with some of the older boys and then I just started climbing up the ladder.’
He added: ‘Then I started getting to bigger bits and making links all over the country. I was trying to get out of it and then I just got greedy.
‘I made one move that shouldn’t really have been made and then it all came tumbling down.’
SAS: Who Dares Wins airs on Sunday nights at 9pm on Channel 4.
