“I Was Not Happy” – Tony Khan Apologized to Hikaru Shida After This Incident

AEW President Tony Khan has prided himself upon standing up for his employees. Recently, he fired an employee after a shameful incident regarding Hikaru Shida.

Tony Khan says no excuses

On March 28, AEW caught Willie Urbina on the mic of the Fite TV broadcast making fun of Asian accents. It was during AEW’s celebration of Hikaru Shida’s year-long tenure as AEW Women’s Champion.

Alex Abrahantes requested Willie Urbina to do a translation for Hikaru’s promo. This lead to Willie doing an impression of Shida and making fun of Asian accents. According to reports, the very next day, AEW had let Urbina go.

During Tony Khan’s post Double or Nothing media scrum, he commented on the judgment and his response to hearing about the incident. He said that he didn’t think there was an excuse, and he was not happy. Tony revealed that letting Willie go was best for the company. He said,

“I didn’t think there was any excuse. I was not happy. Afterwards, I heard what was said and having our commentators involved with what was said about her, who I also apologized to, I thought it was best for the company to make this decision.” (H/t Fightful for transcriptions)

Hikaru Shida’s unsuccessful title defense

This Sunday [May 30, 2021], Hikaru Shida faced off against Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. for the AEW Women’s Championship. It was one of the most entertaining matches of the Double or Nothing pay-per-view event. Both women gave their all and then some, for the title.

Coming back to live wrestling, after a long break due to the pandemic, the fans did not stop cheering for their favorite wrestler. Both women felt the energy resonating from the audience and delivered an equally tremendous performance.

The match ended with a title switch from reigning champion, Hikaru Shida, to the new champion, Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D.
