Lucifer fans have been poring over new episodes of the show after season five part two arrived last weekend, and now showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich have spoken about how their original ending changed after landing a sixth season.
The creators of the supernatural drama originally envisioned the fifth season as the final instalment, and had to make considerable changes to their original plan in order to extend the show further.
As the pair explained, the news that Netflix was renewing the show for season six came just as the pair were writing the original finale. It meant that the final act of season five instead became the basis of the upcoming run.
‘We decided that’s a pretty good cliffhanger,’ Ildy told Collider.
‘As much as we say act six [of season five] became season five, it also undersells season six, because we discovered a ton more story,’ she said.
‘There’s a bunch of stuff we weren’t going to tell that now we can’t imagine not telling. We thought, when we got to the end of season five, we told all the story we wanted to tell. And it wasn’t until we got to the end of season five that we had the perspective to see the story that we could tell with season six,’ Ildy added.
She went on to say: ‘It’s just one of those happy accidents where you’re like, “No, we’ve told all the story… This is going to be all of the story we ever want to tell,” but then you get there, and the characters are telling us, “No, we’ve got one more, one more journey to go on.”’
She added: ‘The ending for the characters is what we took from that aspect. But getting there was where all the rest of the story came from, if that makes sense. We took the same ending for our characters, but stretched it out in the best way…’
Joe also hinted that some of the endings for the individual characters ended up being changed, saying: ‘Almost all of them. And some changed a little bit.’
‘Yeah. Mainly Lucifer,’ Ildy added.
The supernatural series returned after a long delay with eight new episodes last weekend, picking up after the first part of season five landed back in August.
Lucifer is based on the DC Comics character of the same name and has become a cult hit with fans after launching back in 2016.
It follows Tom Ellis’s titular character, otherwise known as the Devil, as he moves out of Hell and settles in Los Angeles. There, he runs a nightclub and helps out the LAPD solve crimes using his supernatural abilities.
Season six will be the final outing, and stars of the programme recently said goodbye after wrapping up filming for the last time.
Emotions were running high for the cast and crew, with Tom, Aimee Garcia (Ella Lopez) and Lesley-Ann Brandt (Mazekeen) all saying their heartfelt goodbyes.
Lucifer seasons 1-3 is available on Amazon Prime Video, seasons 4 onward is available on Netflix.
