A List of Floyd Mayweather’s PPV Events That Flopped

Floyd Mayweather is arguably the most marketable boxer to grace the sport. The undefeated former multi-weight world champion is famous for attracting record numbers in every fight. So much so, many refer to ‘Money Mayweather’ as the king of PPV.

Unfortunately for Mayweather, not all his PPV events brought in huge numbers. While his bouts with Manny Pacquiao and Conor McGregor shattered the records, there were a few blemishes in his incredible record.

Floyd Mayweather PPV fails with Top Rank

Mayweather started his career with famous promotional company, Top Rank. During the early part of his career, the concept of PPV did not exist. Therefore, his first fight on PPV was in 2005 against Arturo Gatti. The event sold only 365,000 PPVs worldwide. While this was a success at the time, it is hardly a number fit for the PPV king.

Another Top Rank event which failed was his high-profile bout against Zab Judah. Despite it being an exciting world title bout, the event sold only 375,000 PPVs. And although Mayweather was getting a fair share of the PPV earnings, he wanted more.

Floyd Mayweather’s failed PPV event after Top Rank

Mayweather split from Top Rank with the aim to earn more through his own promotion. Fortunately for the world champion, he was a big enough name to do that and enjoyed incredible success. All his career bouts after that sold approximately 1 million PPVs, except for one.

Mayweather took on Andre Berto as his last professional bout of the Showtime contract, and it was just months after his record-breaking, blockbuster fight against Manny Pacquiao. No one expected the bout to reach the same numbers considering the vast differences in the fighters’ profiles. However, no one could’ve predicted how badly it did.

The bout sold just 400,000 PPVs and was the sole failure on his incredible run. However, he followed it up with another record-breaking event two years later with his bout against Conor McGregor.

Some will argue that Mayweather’s exhibition against Tenshin Nasukawa was also a PPV failure since they did not even sell it as a PPV event in the US. Such was the lack of hype surrounding the event.
