The setbacks of Tyron Woodley’s MMA career

Woodley vs Marquardt

Tyron Woodley succumbed to his first professional MMA loss against Nate Marquardt. Going into the fight, Woodley was undefeated. He had a perfect record of 10-0. The fight was for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight belt. Marquardt landed a brilliant elbow in the clinch and followed that up with punches and that shut the lights on ‘The Chosen One’

Woodley vs Jake Shields

In his second fight in the UFC, ‘T-Wood’ was pitted against veteran Shields. After three rounds of back-and-forth action, Woodley succumbed to a split-decision loss against Shields. This was the second loss of his MMA career.

Tyron Woodley vs Rory MacDonald

At UFC 174, ‘The Chosen One’ took on Canadian Rory MacDonald in a bid to extend his win streak to 3-0. However, the long rangy welterweight was able to avoid Woodley’s right hand and also stuff takedowns for three rounds. Ultimately, he was able to secure a unanimous decision win over Woodley.

Woodley vs Usman

At UFC 235, Tyron Woodley took on an up-and-coming undefeated prospect in Kamaru Usman. This was the fifth time that ‘The Chosen’ one had his belt on the line. The common consensus going into the fight was that Woodley was a better fighter in all areas. And therefore, should be able to defend his belt with ease. However, on fight night that was not the case. ‘The Chosen One’ displayed little to no offense as ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ manhandled him for five rounds and became the new welterweight champion.

Woodley vs Burns

Woodley returned to action in May 2020 just a little over a year after losing his belt to Usman. He was intent on bouncing back to the win column against ‘Durinho’. However, it was the same story as  ‘The Chosen One’ sat back hoping to land his right hand, which never landed. Burns, on the other hand, effectively used his wrestling, grappling, and striking to secure a lopsided unanimous decision win.

Tyron Woodley vs Colby Covington

In arguably his most heated fight to date, ‘The Chosen One’ took on a fighter he really despised in ‘Chaos’. Woodley stated he made a few changes to his camp and his game in general to be able to bounce back. Many believed that he would perform a lot better against Covington as compared to his recent outings, as there was genuine animosity. After being dominated for four rounds, the fight was called in round five as Woodley yelled in agony while Covington was on top of him. It was later revealed that he suffered a broken rib.

Tyron Woodley vs Vicente Luque

In his last fight with the UFC and his most recent outing, Woodley took on an emerging prospect in Luque. The fight was extremely entertaining and Woodley almost secured a finish in the very first round itself as both men swung for the fences. Unfortunately, Woodley was caught in a Brabo choke and succumbed to his fourth straight loss against Luque at UFC 260.
