BREAKING: Rory McIlroy Withdraws From the 2021 Memorial Tournament Citing Personal Reasons
The 2021 Memorial Tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday (June 3), but the organizers have just received disappointing news. As the Muirfield Village Golf Club gets ready to host the annual event, it was recently learned that four-time major winner Rory McIlroy has pulled out from competing.
Rory McIlroy withdrawing from participating in the 2021 Memorial Tournament is distressing news. McIlroy is one of the fan favorites at Muirfield Village and the crowd will be dejected to miss out on watching him play this year.
Rex Hoggard, who works for Golf Channel, was the first to break out the news via Twitter. In his post, Hoggard briefly mentioned the reason behind McIlroy’s sudden withdrawal.
“Rory McIlroy withdrew from Wednesday’s pro-am at the Memorial and also cancelled his press conference. According to Tour official he cited personal reasons for the WD,” Hoggard tweeted.

There is no extensive explanation as to why Rory McIlroy chose not to play at the Memorial Tournament this year. McIlroy has 19 PGA Tour titles in his trophy cabinet, but he has never won the tournament at Muirfield Village. It is indeed unfortunate that he’ll miss out on an attempt this year.
Rory McIlroy was a part of a featured group with Adam Scott and Viktor Hovland
News about featured groups dropped live even before Rory McIlroy made his decision to withdraw. The organizers had placed him in a featured group with two talented golfers in Adam Scott and Viktor Hovland. However, the other two players will have to continue without McIlroy in their group.
Both Scott and McIlroy are veterans at the Memorial Tournament. They’re well accustomed to playing at Muirfield Village and have made 21 starts combined. While the latter has never recorded a Top 3 finish at the tournament, Scott was the runner-up of the 2019 edition.
Rory McIlroy finished fourth at the 2016 Memorial Tournament, his best result to date. The Northern Irishman looked in good form recently and had a real chance of winning the title this year. While he was not the outright favorite, he was a constant name in several expert picks. However, all of it is in vain now.
Whatever Rory’s going through, we wish him a speedy recovery!
