Is Phil Mickelson Playing at the 2021 Memorial Tournament?

What a journey it has been for Phil Mickelson this year. He entered the 2021 PGA Championship on the back of an unimpressive run of form but emerged as the champion at Kiawah Island. Mickelson then went straight to Fort Worth, Texas, to take part in the Charles Schwab Challenge, but is he also playing at the upcoming Memorial Tournament? 

The Memorial Tournament is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour calendar. Founded by Jack Nicklaus in 1976, the tournament takes center stage during the month of June and the 2021 edition will begin this Thursday and will run through Sunday.

All of the world’s best golfers are taking part in the 2021 Memorial Tournament. The top 10 players from the current FedExCup standings are all participating this year, and the entire field put together boasts 31 major championship titles.

Is Phil Mickelson a part of the field at the 2021 Memorial Tournament? 

Phil Mickelson is a fan favorite at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, the long-standing host of the Memorial Tournament. The veteran golfer has 20 previous starts at this event, which is indeed a massive achievement. He hasn’t missed this tournament since 2014. 

However, all good things must come to an end. Phil Mickelson won’t be playing at the 2021 Memorial Tournament, thus effectively ending his six-year consecutive participation streak. The 50-year-old is taking a brief pause after playing back-to-back events on the tour. 

So, Mickelson won’t be teeing off at the Memorial Tournament this year. Well, that makes two great players missing the event in 2021: Mickelson and Tiger Woods. The latter is still recovering from the injuries he sustained from the single-car crash in February. 

Phil Mickelson has unfortunately never found success at the Memorial Tournament. He’s played at Muirfield Village 20 different times but has never achieved a Top 3 finish. It is indeed surprising to know, as a fourth-place finish is the closest Mickelson’s has ever come at this event. 

Mickelson just achieved the impossible and is now longing for a break. Not many placed their bets on him prior to the 2021 PGA Championship, but he defied all odds by reigning supreme at The Ocean Course.
