During the latest episode of There’s Something About The Movies, Romesh Ranganathan revealed he once auditioned for The Martian but had a particularly painful experience when meeting with the casting director.

The 2015 Matt Damon science fiction movie followed a lone astronaut abandoned on Mars and Nasa’s frustrating efforts to get him home.

Directed by Ridley Scott, the film boast a stunning cast including Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, and Jeff Daniels.

Romesh, however, did not make the cut.

‘I auditioned for The Martian,’ he told host Alan Carr, as well as players Jennifer Saunders, Claudia Winkleman, Rafe Spall, Mark Frost, and Tom Allen. ‘I had to sort of play “brown guy at commuter screen”.

‘I turned up to the audition, I went in and the casting director was sat down and I said, “Do you want me to do this English or American?”

‘She said, “Why don’t we do it as American?”’

And it was disaster from there.

‘I hadn’t prepared American,’ explained Romesh. ‘I can’t even do an American accent – I don’t know why I offered it.

‘I actually thought she’d say English and it will look like I can do both.’

it was a 50:50 chance I was going to make a d**k of myself

‘In retrospect it was a 50:50 chance I was going to make a d**k of myself,’ he admitted.

‘I was reading this out and she started laughing. Then I did it again and she started laughing even louder.

‘Then at the end of it I said to her, “I don’t think there’s any point in me doing it in English, is there?” She said no and that was it.’

There’s Something About The Movies is the Sky One panel show which welcomes a string of A-list Hollywood talent each week to share their unexpected stories from the set of major movies and test their film trivia.

During the latest series, Michael Sheen recalled an odd rule of filmmaker Woody Allen’s during his time in the movie, Midnight in Pars.

There’s Something About The Movies airs tonight at 9pm on Sky One.
