Will Sony and PlayStation Be at E3 2021?

E3 has always been the most anticipated annual gaming event over the years. From Xbox and Nintendo to Capcom and Bandai Namco, the biggest publishers in the world have traditionally taken part in it, and have used the stage to make massive announcements. However, PlayStation has been ignoring E3 from the past few years.

E3 2021 is right around the corner, and everyone seems eager to know about Sony’s participation in it. Before boycotting the event since 2019, the console giant had always been one of the biggest highlights of E3.

PlayStation is confident in its own events than E3 2021

Back in 2020, PlayStation had stated that it respects ESA as an organization, but it does not require E3 to gain the attention of mainstream media. Moreover, sharing the stage with rivals such as Microsoft and Nintendo could prove detrimental.

Sony can announce games like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok at E3 2021. But on the flip side, Microsoft and Nintendo will also try to steal the spotlight with Halo Infinite and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

Considering the competition, PlayStation has relied on its own events such as State of Play lately. Luckily, State of Play has been a massive hit among the fans, and might be Sony’s alternative to other mainstream gaming events such as E3.

Is Sony’s decision to skip E3 events beneficial in the longer run?

From the looks of it, Sony hasn’t suffered a lot by avoiding E3. Instead, it has successfully hyped up the upcoming games, and even the PS5 has overshadowed the Xbox Series X.

Many believe that the launch of the PS5 is also an enormous factor behind the absence of PlayStation at E3. There’s a high possibility of experts and gamers comparing its new-gen console with the Xbox Series X/S and the Nintendo Switch. Considering that millions of enthusiastic fans attend E3, such comparisons can certainly affect the sales of the PS5.

Having said that, E3 2021 is still a bigger gaming event than PlayStation’s State of Play. The latter is a great platform for the Japanese tech-giant to interact with its existing user-base, but the former is much more beneficial for attracting new players.

If Sony seeks to return to E3 in the near future, it might face consequences for its current attitude. As for now, the company can undoubtedly enjoy its newfound independence.
