Injury Report: Cam Newton Injures His Right Hand In Patriots’ OTAs

New England Patriots fans, look away. Your starting quarterback just picked up an injury. According to reports, Cam Newton injured his right hand during the side’s OTAs on Friday.

Dispelling the notion that OTAs are mainly players running non-contact drills, Newton’s injury comes as a major setback for the Patriots franchise. Looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2020 campaign, the Patriots coaching staff might have some tough calls to make over the next few weeks.

Cam Newton injury could pave the way for Mac Jones debut

According to NFL reporter Michael Giardi, Newton picked up the injury after hitting his hand on the helmet of a teammate while practicing.

“Cam Newton appeared to hit his right hand on a helmet and spent considerable time with trainer Jim Whelan and one of the team doctors. OC Josh McDaniels checked in on Newton before continuing to work with the other 3 QBs. Newton watched the remainder of prax (sic)” tweeted Giardi.

Newton was soon looked at by the Patriots‘ medical staff. The seriousness of his injury is yet to be determined.

We all know Newton is a tough cookie. The former NFL MVP is looking to make a mark in 2021 following a lackluster first season with the Pats.

While fans will hope the injury is nothing serious, a long-term layoff could signal the entry of Mac Jones into first-team plans. The quarterback from Alabama was drafted 15th overall by the franchise in the recently concluded draft.

Head Coach and GM Bill Belichick surely seems to have a lot of faith in the young QB as he is the first player of his position to drafted in the first round in the Belichick era.

The rookie took charge of 7-on-7 work while Newton looked on from the sidelines. Last season’s backup QB Jarrett Stidham meanwhile was the QB to take part in the side’s 11-on-11 drills.

Belichick has maintained that Newton will be the side’s starter for the upcoming season. But if the injury is indeed serious, all that could change.

Mac Jones is seen as the long-term solution to the Pats’ QB woes since they moved on from Tom Brady. And as things stand, he might get the chance to prove his mettle much sooner than later.
