Sweet Tooth: Ending of the Netflix show explained as comic book-inspired series launches
Warning: spoilers ahead for season 1 of Sweet Tooth.
Season one of new fantasy drama Sweet Tooth, based on the comic book series of the same name, has launched on Netflix, telling the tale of a part human, part deer boy who embarks on an exciting and treacherous adventure.
In the trailer for the TV show – which boasts a talented cast of actors including Game of Thrones and Heroes alum – it’s explained that 10 years prior to the present day, a virus outbreak swept across the world.
At the same time, hybrid children – babies born part human and part animal – began to emerge, causing some to believe that they were the cause of the disease.
Now that the first season of the drama executive produced by Robert Downey Jr and Susan Downey has been released, what does the ending mean? For a spoiler-filled analysis, read on…
What did the ending of Sweet Tooth mean?
After spending an entire season trying to evade capture with the help of Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie), the ending of Sweet Tooth sees protagonist Gus (Christian Convery) become kidnapped by the military force known as the Last Men after he tries to get in contact with the Preserve, an organisation that promises refuge for hybrids.
Gus is taken to what used to be the Preserve’s base and has now been taken over by General Steven Abbot (Neil Sandilands), who has ordered that Dr Singh (Adeel Akhtar) experiment on hybrid children in an effort to find a cure for the virus.
While Gus is in an extremely dire situation, his capture results in him finally meeting other hybrid children for the first time, including Wendy (Naledi Murray).
Through flashbacks, it’s discovered that Wendy is the lost sister of Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen), the former leader of the Animal Army, a group who swore to protect hybrids, and now a companion of Gus and Jepperd.
Jepperd, on the other hand, who was shot when Gus was taken away, has been rescued by Aimee (Dania Ramirez), the leader of the Preserve who raised Wendy as her daughter and has discovered that all of the hybrid children in her care have been captured.
She tells Jepperd that they’re going to save the children, teasing a dangerous rescue mission in a potential second season.
The ending of Sweet Tooth also called Gus’ parentage into question, as he previously had no reason not to assume that his dad Richard Fox (Will Forte), or ‘Pubba’, was his biological father.
After travelling to the house of his mother, Birdie (Amy Seimetz) in Colorado, Gus comes across files that show that he was actually created in a lab, with Bear and Jepperd realising that he may have been the first hybrid child to come into existence.
In flashback scenes, viewers find out that Birdie and Richard only spent one evening together before Birdie placed Gus in Richard’s care.
In a second season, will Jepperd and Aimee successfully manage to rescue all of the hybrid children, will Dr Singh manage to get away from Abbot with his wife and will Becky be reunited with Wendy? There are so many questions that we need answered!
Is Sweet Tooth based on a comic book?
Sweet Tooth is based on the comic book series of the same name by the DC Comics imprint Vertigo.
Written and illustrated by Jeff Lemire, the conclusion of the original comic book series was published in 2013, with a sequel launching in November last year.
There are some differences between the comic book series and the TV adaptation, with executive producer and Marvel star Robert explaining prior to its release that ‘the graphic novels were a little darker, a bit more foreboding’.
‘We felt we could really hold onto the themes but make it a more enjoyable place,’ fellow executive producer Susan added.
Is Sweet Tooth now on Netflix?
The first season of Sweet Tooth is now available to watch on Netflix, consisting of eight episodes in total.
