Disney drops massive hint about Cruella sequel after critical acclaim
Cruella only hit cinema screens last week but there’s already good news for Disney fans – the film has been such a smash hit the studio is already planning a sequel.
The movie, starring Emma Stone as Cruella de Vil, is a crime comedy based on the character from Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians and Disney’s 1961 silver screen adaptation.
Movie bosses are delighted by the public reception and are said to be planning a follow up.
A Disney spokesperson said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: ‘We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date.
‘The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings.
‘We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.’
The flick has already earned $48.5million (£34.3m) at the box office and is still raking in the cash.
Actress Emma, 32, who portrays Cruella, recently opened up about playing the role, saying she found it strange not being able to smoke on-screen like in the original cartoon.
The villain is known for graciously waving a long cigarette holder around as she goes about her evil ways.
But the character quit smoking for the new Disney prequel as it is no longer allowed on-screen.
On smoking in the movie, Emma told The New York Times: ‘That is not allowed in 2021.
‘We are not allowed to smoke onscreen in a Disney film. It was difficult to not have that cigarette holder.’
Family-friendly Disney banned depictions of smoking on-screen in 2007, after the previous films.
