How I Met Your Mother co-creator would like to change elements of hit comedy ‘and go George Lucas on this thing’
How I Met Your Mother co-creator Carter Bays wishes he could turn back time and change some aspects of the show.
The comedy wrapped more than seven years ago in 2014 and Carter, 45, recently documented his thoughts on Twitter while rewatching the show.
On Friday, he wrote: ‘I won’t go into specifics but I’ll just say I would love to go into an edit room and go George Lucas on this thing and remove certain stuff I really wish wasn’t in there and I bet nobody would miss.’
While Carter may not be able to change any of the old series, he will have some input into upcoming spin-off How I Met Your Father as an executive producer.
The new show was given the green light in April with Hilary Duff winning the leading role.
The new programme is to be created by This Is Us masterminds Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger and it has been given a 10-episode season.
Hilary will star in the series as Sophie, who recounts the story of how she meets her childrens’ Dad.
‘I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,’ the actress said in a statement.
‘As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas, show creators] would trust me with the sequel of their baby.
‘Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius.’
‘I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!’ she added.
Taking over from Josh Radnor’s Ted Moseby, Sophie relies on her close group of friends in New York City as the narrator time-jumps back to 2021.
According to the official announcement, the gang ‘are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options’.
The series will have a similar format to the original show, but it’s not yet known how, or even if, the new series will connect to the old one.
Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will remain as executive producers and said in a joint statement: ‘Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father.
‘We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the HIMYM fans out there who waited for it.)’
How I Met Your Father is yet to be given a release date.
