Sinead O’Connor is officially ‘hanging up her nipple tassels’ as she announced her retirement from the music industry.

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer, 54, has been singing since she was a teenager, and released her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra in 1987.

However, she has now announced that she will be stepping back from music – with her upcoming album, No Veteran Dies Alone, being her last.

Taking to Twitter, she posted: ‘This is to announce my retirement from touring and from working in the record business. I’ve gotten older and I’m tired.

‘So it’s time for me to hang up my nipple tassels, having truly given my all.

‘NVDA in 2022 will be my last release. And there’ll be no more touring or promo.

‘It’s not sad news. It’s staggeringly beautiful news.  A wise warrior knows when he or she should retreat: #MeTime.’

Sinead added: ‘It’s been a forty year journey.  Time to put the feet up and make other dreams come true ; ).’

Fans flooded the post with support, showering the music icon with love.

‘Have always wanted to see you perform live, but your health & wellbeing is far more important,’ a follower said.

‘Feel so lucky and blessed to have seen your show in Santa Cruz right before shut down (and many others),’ a Twitter user posted.

‘Also truly happy that you are taking time for yourself and your well being. You deserve a peaceful life, and being on the road hardly fosters that. #thankyouforthemusicSinead.’

‘There are few artists I have loved and appreciated as much as Sinead,’ another agreed. ‘Beyond her magical music, she used her voice to speak of the unspeakable and suffered greatly for doing so. Sinead, you rest now.’

As one added: ‘Time for you now pet be good and kind to yourself … but for goodness sake don’t be growing old prematurely or gracefully, you’ve too much sass and just as much class to be an aul Fuddy Duddy.

‘I expect to see you gracing the cover of Rolling Stone on a Harley xx.’

Sinead’s 11th and final release will be with us at some point next year, and will consist of seven songs.
