Kate Garraway enjoys staycation with the kids in Cornwall as family looks after Derek Draper
Kate Garraway has revealed she is enjoying a staycation and a break from caring for husband Derek Draper as she took her children to Cornwall.
The Good Morning Britain presenter, 54, filmed daughter Darcey, 15, and son Billy, 11, playing football with their cousins as the sun was setting.
She told her followers that Derek’s family had stepped in to care for him so she was able to have a break and a few days away.
Kate wrote alongside the video: ‘#paradise Thanks to the wonderful mum dad & sisters draper for coming down to be with Derek (with nurses too of course) so I could take my mum dad , Darcey & Billy to Cornwall.
‘And thanks so so much to @peugeotuk for lending us a car to get us there! We got to see my brother aunts uncles cousins & new baby cousins!
‘None of us have been able to get to see each other since Xmas 2019 . So much love & v emotional – not that it made our annual football match any less competitive!!! Hope you have all had a great #halfterm xxx #specialmemories.’
Kate has been looking after Derek at home with the help of nurses since he was discharged from hospital after a year-long stay as he battled coronavirus.
Derek is one of the worst-affected people to have survived after he suffered damage to most of his organs, including holes in his heart and diabetes, after contracting Covid-19 at the end of March 2020.
Although he is now at home, he still requires round-the-clock care as his communication is limited as he tries to recover from the devastating effects of the virus.
Kate said on the Andrew Marr Show last month that Derek ‘can’t really move’ and still requires 24-hour assistance.
She explained: ‘He came home on April 7 so we’re a few weeks into it now. How is he? Look, he’s devastated by Covid.
‘He can’t really move, his communication is very minimal. There are moments where there’s up, you feel you know he’s in there. He has a lot of memory, but the accessing of it is very limited.
‘He’s a long way from the Derek Draper that you know Andrew, but he’s home and he’s alive, he’s asleep now.’
