WATCH: Red Bull Message to FIA’s Michael Masi to Red Flag Baku F1 Race After Verstappen’s Crash

The 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix took a dramatic turn when race leader Max Verstappen crashed out. Apparently, the Red Bull driver’s left rear tire blew up spectacularly and pitched him into the wall. The drivers already got a warning sign when Lance Stroll crashed out in a similar manner.

In light of the Verstappen accident, Red Bull radioed the FIA immediately. They informed them that there was zero warning of the puncture. According to them, “Nothing on the metric, not a vibration. Consider a red flag to give teams an opportunity to change tires.”

Obviously, the Austrian team was worried that other teams could fall victim to another puncture. Stroll had already had a high-speed crash, which left him shaken. Naturally, the FIA complied and threw the red flag, stopping the race with Sergio Perez as the race leader. Behind him are Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel.

The Red Bull driver was gutted to crash out from the lead

Obviously, when Verstappen clambered out, he was furious and kicked his car in frustration. There were just two laps left in the race, and some would have found it odd to restart a race with just two laps left. However, it is what it is and the remaining drivers had to take to the grid for a standing restart.

Perez lined up on pole, ahead of Hamilton and a fired-up Vettel. It is worth noting that Vettel was the only driver in the Top 8 on a brand new set of soft tyres. This gave him an advantage at the start, meaning that he could have potentially jumped the drivers ahead.

Then, in a moment that nobody saw coming, Lewis Hamilton locked up and ran wide. This promoted Vettel up to second and Pierre Gasly to third.
