Kay Burley has returned to work on Sky News following her six month suspension for breaching Covid-19 rules.
Burley was suspended by the broadcaster in December after celebrating her 60th birthday with several colleagues inside a private member’s bar in central London when then city was in Tier 2 restrictions.
The channel’s political editor, Beth Rigby, and correspondent Inzamam Rashid were also both taken off air for three months following the review.
Burley said it was ‘great to be back’ as she opened Monday morning’s show at 7am where she interviewed Gordon Brown, Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees and shadow foreign secretary Lisa Nandy.
‘Hello everybody, it is great to be back. It is seven o’clock here in the UK. Welcome wherever you’re watching us around the world. Let’s crack on,’ she said.
‘Rebellion brewing over foreign aid cuts – does the Prime Minister face defeat? I will ask one of his own MPs, David Davis, who’s joined that rebellion, as well as the shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy, and, from the Government today, Solicitor General Lucy Frazer.
‘Plus we will speak to former prime minister Gordon Brown about Covid and the G7.’
Burley has been one of the most forceful voices when holding politicians to account during the pandemic and was subsequently met with huge backlash when she was found to have broken the rules herself.
Following an internal review, Sky said: ‘All those involved regret the incident and have apologised. Everyone at Sky News is expected to comply with the rules and the company takes breaches like this very seriously indeed.’
In a statement announcing her temporary departure in December, Burley stressed that everyone had a duty “to stick firmly by the rules.”
‘It doesn’t matter that I thought I was Covid-compliant on a recent social event,” she wrote. “The fact is I was wrong, I made a big mistake, and I am sorry.
‘Some dear friends and colleagues – some of the most talented and committed professionals in our business – have been pulled into this episode and I regret this enormously.
‘I very much look forward to being able to continue my 32-year career with Sky when I return.’
