Red Bull Take a Cheeky Swipe at Toto Wolff After Mercedes Horror Show in Baku

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix served fans across the globe with unlimited entertainment. Although some teams fared well, some crashed and burned in the “Land of Fire.” Among all the teams, Red Bull had the best weekend in Baku.

Although Max Verstappen crashed out of the race, his teammate Sergio Perez won the chaotic race on the Baku City Circuit. They took 25 points from the race, while their championship rivals Mercedes took no points at all. The Austrian outfit didn’t shy away from expressing their emotions, taking a shot at Mercedes CEO Toto Wolff with a tweet after the race.

Red Bull go after Toto Wolff with cheeky wordplay on his ‘windbag’ comment

Toto Wolff and Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner were at it all weekend. With the flexi wing debate raging, the animosity between the two team principals reached fever pitch in the “Land of Fire.”

While Horner insisted Wolff shouldn’t debate much given Mercedes’ front wing, the Austrian fired back by calling the Briton “a windbag.”

After Sergio Perez won a chaotic race in Baku, where the two championship contenders didn’t score points, Red Bull didn’t hold back their joy. In fact, they took it one step further and kept the verbal war with Mercedes going with this clever tweet.

Mercedes, on the other hand, endured another disappointing weekend on a street circuit. Valtteri Bottas struggled throughout the race, ultimately finishing P12. Hamilton, despite keeping Perez under pressure for a majority of the race, choked in the restart after the red flag caused by Verstappen’s crash. He ran off the track in Turn 1 to go all the way back to P15, finishing not just behind his teammate, but also behind the two Haas cars.

What’s next in the championship battle?

With Red Bull garnering 25 points through Checo’s win, they are now 26 points clear of the Silver Arrows heading into the French Grand Prix.

Although Verstappen crashed out of the race, Hamilton couldn’t take advantage after finishing P15. This means the Dutchman keeps his four-point lead at the top of the driver’s championship intact.

However, with Mercedes‘ dominant history in Le Castellet, Red Bull might feel vulnerable despite back-to-back wins in street races. Can the Austrian outfit keep their lead in both championships after June 20?
