WATCH: Mick Schumacher Celebrates Sebastian Vettel’s Baku Podium on Haas Team Radio

Mick Schumacher shares a healthy relationship with his German compatriot, Sebastian Vettel. Although the two drivers have an age gap of 12 years, they often chat a lot with each other, both in the paddock and after track sessions. In addition, Mick’s father, Michael Schumacher, is Vettel’s childhood hero.

After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Schumacher expressed his happiness for Vettel’s result on the team radio. The Aston Martin driver finished second, while the Haas driver finished thirteenth after a chaotic race on Sunday.

Mick Schumacher pleased with Vettel’s P2 finish

The streets of Baku played host to another crazy race. Although Vettel started from P11, he clawed his way up the grid to finish an impressive P2.

He started the race on a set of soft tires, which he managed extremely well for the first 19 laps of the race. With a fresh set of hard tires on, Vettel climbed to P6 before his teammate, Lance Stroll, crashed in Lap 30. After the safety car went back in, Vettel immediately jumped Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly to P4.

In Lap 47, more fortune shined on Vettel after race leader Max Verstappen crashed out of the race. In addition, a standing start after the resulting red flag saw Lewis Hamilton fall to P15, ultimately giving second place to Vettel. His good run of form continued in the ‘Land of Fire,’ with his exploits earning him the ‘Driver of the Day.’

Although Schumacher was at the back of the pack for the entire race, the German expressed delight for his compatriot. He said, “Woah, really good! Happy! Happy for him.”

How’s Schumacher’s season been so far?

Schumacher joined Haas after winning the F2 championship in 2020. His debut season has drawn mixed reactions from fans. While some have lauded him for the pace he’s shown, others pointed out the rookie mistakes he’s made in some of his crashes across his first five races.

The 21-year-old recorded his highest-ever finish in his F1 career in Baku, finishing P13. Although only 16 cars finished the race, the German did well to stay out of trouble and finish behind Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.

Although Haas are far behind the pack at the moment, Schumacher has shown flashes of pace in some races so far. A product of the Ferrari driver academy, the German will look to stay ahead of his teammate, Nikita Mazepin, while trying to score unlikely points finishes in the remaining 17 races.
