“We Were Trying to Impress Austin” – Kurt Angle Reveals Stone Cold Did Not Want to Work With Him and Chris Benoit

It’s not uncommon for Superstars to try to impress big names on the roster. In fact, this is a norm which was coming during The Attitude Era as well. The story of Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit trying to impress Stone Cold Steve Austin is a good example of the phenomenon.

During a conversation with Conrad Thompson, Kurt Angle revealed that Benoit and he wanted to impress Stone Cold Steve Austin. Hence, they decided to capitalize on a steel cage match on July 11th, 2001 where The Texas Rattlesnake was witnessing it.

Unfortunately, they took their game a step too far and instead of impressing Stone Cold, they pushed him away. Stone Cold believed Angle and Benoit were extreme workers in the ring and did not want to work with them.

“We were upcoming talent. Austin was out there watching the match. We were trying to impress Austin. I think we went way too far because we actually scared him away. We were trying to show him that we wanted to work with him, and he’s like, ‘these guys are crazy bastards, I’m not going to work with them.’ You know, he even told me that later down the line, and we just threw everything in the kitchen sink into that match”

“Chris and I were crazy that night; his flying headbutt off the top, my moonsault, they all could have been finishes, and you know; unfortunately, we went a little further forward. Fortunately, nobody got hurt, but the match turned out to be incredible. But, from a working standpoint of wrestling Austin, it didn’t appeal to him to want to work with us. We had to earn his respect back eventually in another way.”

Kurt Angle revealed the move which probably stopped Stone Cold Steve Austin

While talking about the match, Angle put emphasis on a particular moment of the match that was quite dangerous.

Angle and Benoit attempted The German Spot. It wasn’t a common instance in WWE and the duo wanted to show Stone Cold Steve Austin what they could do.

“The German spot? The German spot was the most dangerous spot we did in that match. It might not look like it, but that’s the toughest one to take, off the top rope, backward. There’s a great chance you’re going to land on your head; probably 99% of the time, you’re going to land on your head. So, it’s one of those taking-the-chance moves that you do that you don’t know if you’re going to get injured or not, but Chris and I had to prove a point that night.” h/t Sportskeeda

Even though they couldn’t impress Austin that night, Angle and Benoit became huge Superstars in WWE and reached immense height within the industry.
