Kyle Larson and Hendrick Motorsports Look Like 2021 Title Contenders

On Sunday, Kyle Larson became the first driver to take consecutive Cup Series wins in 2021. This came after he stormed to victory during the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at the Sonoma Raceway. Behind him was teammate and reigning champion Chase Elliott, thus proving that Hendrick Motorsports is a force to reckon with.

Speaking to SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Larson said, “Awesome day to win! I thought for sure Martin Truex or Chase would be the best and I had to somehow try to steal the win. We were extremely good today and had the best car. Able to win both stages again and win the race. Cool to be able to go out there and pass some cars and get to lead as easily as we did. To win a race in my hometown is great!”

What else did Kyle Larson say about his race?

According to the Asian-American, his #5 car was excellent on the short runs. It also was not too shabby in terms of long-run pace. However he did confess that Truex Jr managed to make some inroads during one long run stint. By then, Kyle Larson was already approaching the end of his stint.

Having said all that, he frankly considered himself as a good road racer. On this occasion at the Sonoma Raceway, he had the pace to get out in front. The #5 driver acknowledged that he needed to be aggressive in the braking zones in order to pass other drivers. According to him, Martin Truex Jr is also quite adept at that, and Chase Elliott is no slouch either.

As a result, he put in a lot of hard work during the week to improve his form under braking. Suffice to say, it paid off handsomely as he could out-brake several drivers at Turn 7 and at Turn 11. With the Hendrick Motorsports boys on a roll, we can be sure that they are the firm favorites for the championship.
