Loki, the MCU’s God of Mischief, sure does know how to cause chaos… and boy does he enjoy it.

New Marvel series Loki has finally launched on Disney Plus, reuniting fans with the irresistibly charming character brought to life by Tom Hiddleston.

It’s been 10 years since viewers were first introduced to the Asgardian in the first Thor film and he is still up to his usual meddling ways, wreaking havoc everywhere he goes.

In his eponymous show, Loki is apprehended by an organisation called the TVA (Time Variance Authority) after unknowingly causing a breach in the timeline following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Loki’s had a rollercoaster journey in the MCU up until now, from trying to take over Earth as a sovereign ruler to dying, surviving, dying… and then surviving again.

Here’s his story so far, with its many ups and downs, backstabbing moments and glimpses of redemption.

Loki’s story so far in the MCU: A timeline

When viewers first meet Loki in Thor, it’s revealed that he has devious plans… and they don’t involve following Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as the new king of Asgard.

After Loki discovers that he is actually the biological son of Frost Giant leader Laufey, his adopted father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), falls into a deep sleep, allowing him to take over the throne and keep an exiled Thor trapped on Earth.

However, Thor eventually returns to Asgard, where he and Loki engage in a bitter fight.

At the end of the film, it appears that Loki has died after falling from the destroyed Bifrost Bridge… but the post-credits scene reveals he is actually alive.

In The Avengers, Loki wishes to take over Earth as the planet’s ruler, a plan he strives to make a reality with the help of an alien race called the Chitauri.

Using his Scepter, which contains the Mind Stone, Loki is able to hypnotise Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Dr Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) into doing his bidding, taking control of the Tesseract – aka the Space Stone – to create a portal into space.

The Chitauri arrive on Earth through the portal, ravaging the Big Apple in the Battle of New York.

However, after a fight against the Avengers – the first time the group actually bond together properly as a team – Loki and the Chitauri are defeated, with Loki being taken back to Asgard by Thor as a prisoner.

In the second Thor film, Asgard and Earth face a new threat – the Dark Elves, who are in search of an ancient weapon called the Aether.

After astrophysicist Dr Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) absorbs the Aether, Thor brings her back to Asgard, where the Dark Elves come looking for her, killing Thor and Loki’s mother, Frigga (Rene Russo) in the process.

Despite Loki still being in prison following The Avengers, Thor decides to enlist his help in the fight against the Dark Elf leader Malekith (Christopher Eccleston).

Loki is fatally stabbed in the battle, seemingly dying in Thor’s arms. However, his survival is revealed yet again at the end of the film when viewers learn that he is impersonating Odin on Asgard.

After Thor returns to Asgard to find Loki pretending to be Odin, they travel to Earth in search of their father, who explains that Ragnarok – the prophesied destruction of Asgard – is on the way.

As Odin dies, Loki and Thor’s unknown sister Hela, the Goddess of Death, (Cate Blanchett) appears, who faces them both in a fight before the brothers end up on a planet called Sakaar.

On Sakaar, Thor reunites with Loki and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and meets Asgardian warrior Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), convincing them all to help him save Asgard from Hela.

While they’re unable to prevent Ragnarok from occurring, they are able to defeat Hela, and they leave Asgard in a spaceship carrying the surviving Asgardians.

Shortly after saving the remaining Asgardians from their doom, Thor and Loki’s spaceship is intercepted by Thanos (Josh Brolin), who beats Hulk in a fight and leaves a chained-up Thor unable to move.

After Thanos takes hold of the Space Stone, placing it in the Infinity Gauntlet, Loki attempts to trick the Titan into believing he will join him on the rest of his conquest.

However, in a desperate final attempt to stop Thanos, Loki tries to kill him with a concealed dagger, in a ploy which fails dismally as Thanos strangles Loki to death.

A devastated Thor mourns the death of his brother yet again and is eventually saved from space by the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Several years after the events of Infinity War, when Thanos snapped half of the universe out of existence, the Avengers embark on a risky mission to retrieve the Infinity Stones and reverse the Blip.

To do this, they travel through time to different points in history where they know the Infinity Stones will be, one of them being the 2012 Battle of New York from the first Avengers film.

Following Loki’s capture after the battle, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) picks up the Tesseract in a briefcase, before accidentally dropping it on the floor.

Loki seizes his opportunity to escape, picking up the Tesseract and disappearing into thin air.

Loki’s eponymous Marvel series follows the character after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Therefore, this version of the character is the one from the first Avengers film, who hasn’t experienced any of the events from The Dark World, Ragnarok or Infinity War.

Loki’s decision to pick up the Space Stone causes a rift in the timeline, resulting in him being arrested by the TVA.

Despite being found guilty of disrupting the timeline, the TVA decide to use Loki to help them solve a major problem they’re facing.

Following the premiere of Loki on Disney Plus, there are so many massive questions we have about how the show will impact the rest of the MCU.

Will this version of Loki ever be reunited with Thor again? Could his story be linked to the major cliffhanger in WandaVision? Is the demonic Mephisto ever going to show up?

After 10 years of waiting for his first solo outing… we have high hopes that Loki is going to live up to our expectations.
