‘Our Steph Curry’: George Karl Explains How Hawks Are Building Their Team With Trae Young

The Atlanta Hawks have been a breath of fresh air in this year’s playoffs with their enigmatic point guard, Trae Young. No other player energizes the crowd like Young does. Ever since the draft deal between Dallas and the Hawks regarding Trae and Luka happened, both these franchises are building squads for the future.

However, unlike the Mavs, the Hawks advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals to keep their hopes alive. Trae Young has silenced all his doubters after putting up some amazing performances in this year’s playoffs. Former NBA coach of the year, George Karl, explained how the Hawks were building their side similar to Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.

George Karl draws comparisons between Stephen Curry and Young

In a recent interview, Karl mentioned how he has become a huge fan of Trae Young, and he outlined the intentions of the Atlanta Hawks regarding Trae.

“But the pieces they have assembled are smart decisions. They have some veteran guys but they have kinda taken, I think the blueprint of the Golden State Warriors of Steph Curry, and they are saying Trae Young is our Steph Curry,” said Karl.

Karl also spoke about the solid supporting cast that Atlanta has gathered.

With Clint Capela, John Collins, and Bogdanovic, the Hawks have players who can take the load of Young. However, the team works well when he is in form. Young has averaged 29.2 points and 9.8 assists per game in his 6 games in the playoffs. That is staggering. The Hawks took game 1 against Philadelphia but lost the second game today.

Despite that, the series is tied 1-1, and the next two games are in Atlanta. Young has powered the Hawks so far and there are shades of Curry in his game.

The Hawks are on the rise

The Warriors found success in building a team around Stephen Curry as they won three NBA titles. With Thompson and Green, Curry won his first NBA title in 2015. And after KD joined them, the Warriors were unstoppable and added two more titles.

The influence of Curry has been incredible, and the similarities between Young and him are there to see. Both these players are accurate three-point shooters and potent threats inside the paint.

Building pieces around a key player would complement any team, and the Hawks are doing that right now. With Young’s devastating shooting range, they have a bonafide star for years to come. With an able support cast, the Atlanta Hawks look set to compete in the playoffs for years to come. But can the Atlanta Hawks go all the way with Trae Young this year?
