Oscar De La Hoya Targeting a Floyd Mayweather Rematch After Two Tune-Up Fights

Oscar De La Hoya is easily one of the best boxers of his generation. The former six-weight world champion has since announced he will return to the ring at 47. And now, ‘The Golden Boy’ has teased a blockbuster rematch against his arch-nemesis Floyd Mayweather.

De La Hoya revealed he would return to the ring on July 3. However, struggles with finding an opponent meant De La Hoya had to reschedule his return. He has now revealed his next fight timeline and teased a bout with ‘Money Mayweather.’

The 39-6 pro boxer spoke to Triller CEO Ryan Kavanaugh on an Instagram Livestream. Kavanaugh revealed that De La Hoya would fight in September. As a result, this confirmed that the July date was off. However, they mentioned nothing about a new opponent and confirmed they would try to get Georges St-Pierre again.

Meanwhile, De La Hoya dropped a bombshell. While talking about the recently concluded Mayweather vs. Logan Paul exhibition, he said, “I’ll tell you one thing, bro. let me get, let me get like, two fights in, you know. And then you watch. I can f***ing call out Mayweather. You watch.” He then added, “In a f***ing real fight, bro.”

Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather: The history

The comments from De La Hoya showed how badly he wants to settle the scores with Mayweather. Furthermore, he confirmed it would not be an exhibition but a professional bout. However, this will not happen anytime soon. So, let’s look back at the history between the two.

Mayweather faced De La Hoya in 2007 in what was a high-profile bout. Weeks of trash-talking and intense promotion promised an exciting fight. On fight night, Mayweather walked out with his famous costume and Sombrero in the Mexican colors.

The bout lived up to expectations, and both fighters went at it for 12 rounds. After neither fighter could get the stoppage, the fight went to the scorecards, and Mayweather pipped him to a split decision.

Therefore, there is some unsolved rivalry between the two. And evidently, De La Hoya wants to settle the scores. Only time will tell if this really happens and if it would be a professional bout.

What do you make of these comments from Oscar De La Hoya? Do you think the former champion should face Floyd Mayweather?
