‘Pretty Special’ – Rory McIlroy Announces Exciting News for Irish Fans

Rory McIlroy has been busy on the PGA Tour and picked up a win at the Wells Fargo Championship recently. It’s been a while since McIlroy competed on the European Tour, but the wait will soon be over. In fact, the four-time major winner will be returning to his hometown to compete at the Irish Open! 

It’s been a while since McIlroy last played at the Irish Open, which is now called Dubai Duty Free Irish Open for sponsorship reasons. The 32-year-old’s hardcore fans would be rejoicing that he chose to compete at the event despite a busy PGA Tour calendar. 

But Rory McIlroy won’t be the only major winner playing at the Irish Open this year. Shane Lowry, Padraig Harrington, and Graeme McDowell will all tee it up at Mount Juliet Estate, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, Ireland, from July 1-4. 

Rory McIlroy is excited about returning to the Irish Open

McIlroy has been busy on the PGA Tour and took part in the recently concluded Memorial Tournament. The Irish Open is only scheduled to commence from July 1, and Rory McIlroy will compete at the event after taking part at the 121st U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. 

“I am really excited to get back and play the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open,” McIlroy said in a statement. “I have so many incredible memories of this event down the years, not least my victory in 2016. It is going to be a pretty special week with the fans returning. I’m really excited to play in front of them again.”

Indeed, Rory McIlroy reigned supreme at the 2016 Irish Open by scoring 12-under par over four rounds. The event was hosted by the Rory McIlroy Foundation and over a million euros was raised for charity. 

McIlroy did not play at the Irish Open in 2019 or 2020. His most recent appearance at the tournament came in 2018 where he shot 2-under and finished T28. McIlroy returning to the play at the Irish Open after a two-year gap has everyone excited! 

Rory McIlroy was going through a rough patch this season but only allowed it to last for a while. He once again got back on the winner’s circle with a win at the Wells Fargo Championship and is in good form heading into the U.S. Open. Where do you think he’ll finish?
