PFL is ready to welcome the two-time Olympic gold medalist in women’s boxing to MMA. The ‘G.W.O.A.T.’ Claressa Shields will make her debut against Britney Elkin in a lightweight cash on June 10. As a lot of eyes will be on the debutant, Shields and Elkin will headline the event.
For her debut, Shields trained with UFC pound-for-pound number one fighter Jon Jones at Jackson Wink MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico.‘T-Rex’ joined Kevin Iole from Yahoo! Sports to describe her experience while training with ‘Bones’.
Shields said, “It’s been great to have training sessions with him and to learn from him. And just to see his work ethic and to see that we’re kind of one and the same. It’s just he’s MMA and I’m boxing like one we both are great fighters. And then we don’t get enough credit for our mental strength, you know, for our strategic mindset.”
Shields continued, “People look at it as just athleticism when it’s so much more than athleticism. That we have like we’re athletic human beings, but we have a lot of discipline. We have just a lot of grit, a lot of self-belief, and we both believe in hard work and repetition. And you don’t meet a lot of people like that.”
“Actually came down here and me and him spent a couple of training sessions together. And they were three-four hours of piece and like the coaches just sit there and look because they’re like we don’t get to experience this.”
Jon Jones is helping Claressa Shields to become the ‘G.W.O.A.T’
Jon Jones is one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time and arguably the G.O.A.T. Now, he is helping Shields to fulfill her dream of becoming the G.W.O.A.T. Although ‘T-Rex’ is the undisputed queen in women’s boxing, she still needs to make a lot of adjustments to become a successful mixed martial artist.
‘T-Rex’ is a superior boxer and will find it easy on her feet, whereas her opponent will try to make it a proper MMA contest. This is where training with Jones will help her stay in the fight. Claressa Shields is one of the toughest women both physically and mentally, plus she is also a quick learner that makes her a deadly combination all around.
Will training with Jones help her in making a successful MMA debut at PFL?
