The thought of death terrifies me and I’m worried it’s becoming a phobia

I have been scared of dying ever since I was a child. But now I’m 71 and I know it’s coming ever closer, my fear is getting out of hand.

I have started to have panic attacks and get hysterical when I think about death.
I’ve tried to face my fears by going to funerals, reading self-help books, seeing a therapist and even sitting with my step-mum when she died. It hasn’t helped.
It’s my own death that scares me – the fact that I won’t be in control of it.
My mum died suddenly when I was only three years old.
How can I overcome this fear? It’s ruining my life.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your fear of death is called necrophobia. Losing your mum at such a young age will have had a profound effect on you and your family.
I’m certain this is at the root of your anxiety.
You lost the most important person in your life, suddenly, when you were too young to understand. It left a huge void.
My support pack on Anxiety will help you. Also contact Anxiety UK (anxietyuk.org.uk, 03444 775 774).
It produces a leaflet on necrophobia, which you can download.
