‘Unique Place’ – Palmetto Championship Leader Wes Roach Comments on Congaree Golf Club

The Palmetto Championship at Congaree got off to a superb start on Thursday. The third South Carolina event on the tour showed plenty of promise in Round 1 as there were several low-scoring rounds. 32-year-old Wes Roach is currently leading the pack at Congaree Golf Club, and here’s what he had to say when asked about the venue:

The Congaree Golf Club is hosting a PGA Tour event for the first time in its history. However, the players had no trouble adapting to the conditions in South Carolina. Wes Roach played his way to a brilliant 7-under 64 and gained leaderboard honors on Thursday.

“Yeah, it’s a very unique place,” Roach said about the Congaree Golf Club. “I was fortunate enough to come down with a few people from Knoxville just before the course was shut down two weeks ago and so it was nice to have an extra look. It was a little bit firmer and faster then than it is now, but, yeah, it’s a special place, obviously with what they do outside of golf and a very unique place.”

The Congaree Golf Club was just established in 2018, but it has already gained massive acclaim from the golf community. A successful conclusion to the Palmetto Championship will certainly raise thoughts about hosting an annual PGA Tour event here.

Wes Roach shot low-round of the season at Palmetto Championship

Wes Roach joined the PGA Tour in 2014 and is still in search of his maiden victory. He’s come close multiple times, but the Palmetto Championship might be the tournament where he finally gets it done.

Roach is playing well at Congaree Golf Club from what we’ve seen in Round 1. He eased his way to 7-under which also marked his lowest round on the tour this season. In fact, the score was also one-shy of his career-best on the PGA Tour.

Wes Roach made six birdies en route to posting the lowest score in Round 1 of the Palmetto Championship. He displayed 71.43% driving accuracy on Thursday, which is exactly what was required at the Congaree layout.

Roach has got off to a good start, which in turn gives him a solid chance at winning the Palmetto Championship at Congaree. There’s still a long way to go, but if the Tennessee native produces three more low-scoring rounds, he’ll be the eventual champion.
