Teofimo Lopez Feels Vasyl Lomachenko Is Still Trying to Move On From His Loss, Vows to Knock Him Out in the Rematch

Teofimo Lopez pulled off one of the biggest upsets in modern boxing when he beat Vasyl Lomachenko. However, it was no fluke. The 23-year-old lightweight danced with the 2-time Olympic gold medalist in the ring, securing a UD on the scorecards. The scorecards themselves, 119-109, 117-111, and 116-112, attracted controversy.

Lomachenko has been making statements post the contest that discredits his opponent’s win. He has accused the judges of not being objective about the fight because of the range in which they scored the fight. Also, he has been vocal about a shoulder injury he had sustained in the fight.

More recently, ‘Loma’ told ESPN’s Mark Kriegel that, after re-watching the fight multiple times, he believes it should’ve been a draw.

Lopez addressed this. The ‘Undisputed Lightweight champion’ told a group of reporters, “Loma, he finally took an actual loss, for the first time in his whole career, from amateur to pro.”

The fight between the two gentlemen was competitive throughout. It was clear, however, that Lopez was the one landing more of his shots from the start. ‘The Takeover’ was pressing the action forward for the initial half of the fight. Lomachenko, however, retaliated after round 7.

Teofimo Lopez said that he feels that ‘Loma’ could not digest the loss. “So, he don’t know how to take a loss. You know, my whole thing is like the fact that, you know, seeing the way he is and the way he’s trying to move and all that, he’s just someone that is a sore loser. That’s all it is. I beat him clearly. And when I said, ‘Come on,’ and I said, ‘Step up to the plate,’ he backed down. So, that goes to show, man. And if we were to fight again, he’ll get knocked out and he knows it. I took his heart,” he told a group of reporters.

Lomachenko has maintained that he believes that Teofimo Lopez is indeed the undisputed lightweight champion of the world. He is, however, itching to throw heavy leather with the guy who dethroned him from atop the pound-for-pound list.

‘The Matrix’ believes their first encounter was extremely close. However, since there was no rematch clause stipulated in the contract, an immediate rematch didn’t take place.

The unified lightweight champion will put his belts on the line against George Kambosos Jr on June 19. Vasyl Lomachenko will also face Masayoshi Nakatani on June 26.
