Lewis Hamilton Laments F1’s Hypocrisy Over Sustainability Push

Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton isn’t a 7-time world champion, but an environmental activist as well. Hence, the 36-year-old has stated his concerns about the new 2022 regulations that will make the car wider, which in turn will consume more energy.

The new changes set to make a mark for the 2022 season will see the car weight increase to a minimum of 760 kgs. Furthermore, a full tank will see it rise to 900 kgs.

Lewis Hamilton feels that the sport of F1 is heading in the wrong direction

As quoted by PlanetF1, Hamilton said, “I don’t understand why we go heavier, particularly when there’s all this talk about being more sustainable and the sport going in that direction.”

“By going heavier and heavier and heavier, you are using more and more energy. So that’s not really going in the right direction or the right thought process,” Hamilton concluded.

Hamilton might depart from F1 if they don’t meet eye to eye on ecological issues

The Knight has urged his dream of winning a title, seven to be exact. Hence, Hamilton might feel that it’s time to be a voice for the environment, as the sport he is part of leaves a massive carbon footprint on the planet. So, in order to fight that, Lewis might decide to throw in the towel and focus on helping the environment.

In an interview with Wired, Hamilton said, “I could quit. The positives of that are that I won’t be driving a car around 20 different tracks, we’ll be flying less. But the fact is if I stop, the thing will keep going. They’re not going to stop for me.”

“I’m having conversations, trying to hold people in the sport more accountable. I’m constantly sending emails, I’m constantly on Zoom calls with Formula 1 and challenging them.” Hamilton explained.

However, Lewis hasn’t extended his contract with the Silver Arrows that sees him on the grid for the 2022 season. This further speculates that Hamilton might step away from the sport that he has dominated to help conserve our blue planet.
