Has Roger Federer Won the Most Number of Wimbledon Championships?
The Wimbledon 2021 is about to begin in two weeks and fans seem quite excited about it. The Grand Slam didn’t take place last year due to the coronavirus pandemic and as a result, Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep are still the defending champions of the major. However, one name automatically strikes everyone’s minds when they hear anything about Wimbledon and that is, Roger Federer.
Roger Federer and the Wimbledon Championships have a special connection. It is for the first time at this Grand Slam only that the tennis world got to know about him. Interestingly, he won his first-ever major at the Wimbledon Championships 2003 at the age of 22 years. However, is Federer the player who has won the most number of Wimbledon titles to date?
It is actually true that on the men’s side, Federer has won the most number of Wimbledon Championships. He currently has eight titles to his name and is one ahead of Pete Sampras’ tally of seven Wimbledon titles.
However, on the women’s side, it is Martina Navratilova who has won a total of nine titles at Wimbledon. So overall, it is Navratilova who has won the most number of Wimbledon titles. Federer can equal the tally if he manages to win the title this year.
Some Unprecedented Records of Roger Federer at the Wimbledon Championships
Apart from being the player with the most titles, World No.8 Federer is the only player who has more than 100 wins at the Wimbledon Championships 2021. Right now, he has a win-loss of 101-12 at the Grand Slam. Only Rafael Nadal has a better record at any Grand Slam (105-3 at the French Open).
The Swiss Maestro has also played the most number of finals in the history of Wimbledon. He has an 8-4 win-loss record in the 12 finals that he has been a part of at the major. Intriguingly, he also holds the record for the most consecutive final appearances with seven, spanning from 2003 to 2009.
In addition, apart from a second-round exit in 2013, Federer has always made the top-8 since 2003. It definitely gives an idea about his dominance and consistency when it comes to playing at the Wimbledon Championships.
There’s a lot at stake for Federer this time as this might prove to be his very last Wimbledon. Will he be able to win his 21st Grand Slam title in London this year?
