“It is an Expensive Hobby”: Sebastian Vettel Agrees With Lewis Hamilton on the ‘Wild’ Costs of F1

It is a fact that Formula One is an expensive sport, and in recent years it has skyrocketed, making it difficult for those who dream as they lack the funding. Sebastian Vettel is well aware of the cost of the sport and, hopes that they can be lowered and make it accessible to everyone.

The four-time world champion acknowledges that in today’s environment things have been even more difficult, as it has become expensive. He wishes to see more drivers coming from humble origins just like he did.

Sebastian Vettel knows that Formula One is an expensive hobby

As quoted from Motorsport.com, Vettel said, “If I were to start over from a working-class family, it would be impossible for me to be here today because the other boys would have a lot more money.”

“We have to work to change that and make this an accessible sport, for the rich and for people with more humble origins.” There’s not a quick fix, but ultimately, the costs are too high.”

“I don’t think it will be a quick fix, but there are certain things that could be addressed to try and make the sport more accessible for all types of backgrounds and all children. It is an expensive hobby, no matter which way you look at it. But certainly it’s gone wild in the last years, and got way too expensive,” Vettel concluded.

Hamilton is one of the drivers that has come from a humble family, later was backed by McLaren to make it into F1. He agrees that with Vettel that drivers from the simple background can no longer make a path to F1 as now it has become a “billionaire’s club”

As quoted from PlanetF1, Lewis said, “For me personally, we live in a time when this has become a billionaire boys’ club. If I had to start over from a working-class family, it would be impossible for me to be here today. Because the other kids would have a hell of a lot more money.”
