Triple H insists WWE can’t overdo nostalgia without people becoming disinterested

WWE legend Triple H has claimed the wrestling giant can’t focus too much on nostalgia or it’ll lose its impact.

The NXT boss – whose brand gave old school fans a real treat with TakeOver: In Your House on Sunday night – has suggested there could be too much of a good thing, and looking back at the past needs to be balanced with a focus on the future.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk after last night’s show, he said: ‘I think in these situations there’s always stuff to do. I think the tricky balance is nostalgia being nostalgia, and it being too much of that.

‘The reason it’s nostalgia is because you saw so much of it growing up and you love it, you wanna see it come back and see the group come and play their biggest hits and all that stuff.

‘If you do it too many times, it can become overwhelming and not nostalgic anymore, now it just becomes current and you’re not that interested. It’s a fine balance.’

The Game was responding to the idea of bringing in veteran broadcaster Todd Pettengill more regularly in the future after he shone as the host of In Your House.

He added: ‘I’m wide open to working with Todd and doing other stuff with him, and hopefully we can do a lot together.

‘I think there’s room for all of that but I think it’s a fine balance and we have to be cautious of that.’

Given the NXT brand’s identity and focus on the stars of tomorrow – the likes of Bray Wyatt, Sasha Banks, Bianca Belair, Becky Lynch and Kevin Owens have all come through the ranks – it makes sense to want to retain that.

Triple H’s comments come after Todd himself admitted he would be delighted to do more with WWE, if it’s something the company was keen on.

He exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘I’d love to – I’m available for whatever these guys need. We’ve had such a good relationship over the years, and really it’s a long time!

‘Now that I’m done with the radio and my schedule’s a little freer it would be fun to help any way that I can. If it’s just the occasional pop-in that’s fine, if it’s something more regularly that’s great too!’

*WWE’s NXT airs every Tuesday night at 1am on BT Sport.
