Is F1 Heading for a Double-Header in United States This Season?

F1 and Singapore race coordinators affirmed that the current year’s Singapore Grand Prix won’t happen. It is because of progressing security and strategic concerns due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The race, on the Marina Bay Street Circuit, was the 16th race of the 2021 championship. It was scheduled for October 1-3.

“We understand that our fans were looking forward to another edition of the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix,” said Colin Syn, Deputy Chairman of Singapore GP Pte Ltd.

Last month, the Turkish Grand Prix was dropped due to the new COVID-19 travel limitations. It had supplanted the 2021 Canadian Grand Prix. Also, the French Grand Prix had to move 1 week earlier, while the second race in Austria was added to the schedule for June 25-27. The second Austrian Grand Prix is called the Styrian Grand Prix.

A second F1 race in the United States

A second Grand Prix in the United States is in contention to fill the void created by the cancelation of the Singapore Grand Prix. The US Grand Prix will be held on 24 October. The American race was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In an interview with ESPN, COTA boss Bobby Epstein said a US doubleheader is possible.

“As long as I put the word possible in front of it, then we’re good,” Epstein told ESPN. “A second race in Austin is possible’ – I read that and thought, well that’s true.

“A second race in Austin is a done deal – that is not true. But it’s easy to flip it if they decide they want to and they need to and it’s the best decision for the sport, they can make that decision and we’re there for that.”

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), is also seen as another possible track for a substitute 2021 race. The track has not hosted an F1 race since 2007.
