After his big win over Vasyl Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez got hold of all the belts and tagged himself as the undisputed unified lightweight champion. However, a closer look at the scenario would put a dent in this belief.
Lopez is rightly the world champion for all three boxing organizations- WBA, WBO, and IBF. However, Devin Haney holds the real WBC belt at 135 lbs and Lopez only has the “franchise” strap. Unless he gets hold of Devin Haney’s belt, Teofimo Lopez wouldn’t be the rightfully undisputed champion.
Furthermore, Gervonta Davis has the WBA (regular) belt at 135 lbs, which Lopez doesn’t need to claim, to tag himself as the undisputed titlist. But a mega-match between Haney and Lopez would stage the only man to have all four major lightweight belts in boxing.
Nevertheless, the matchup is nowhere close to being official. Both Haney and Lopez are making separate walks in their respective careers. However, the ongoing title scenario can put them against each other. And then, Teofimo Lopez can prepare to become the actual unified, undisputed lightweight champion of the world.
