Worst game ever made Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties is being re-released for some reason

The infamously terrible Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties is receiving a physical and digital re-release on modern platforms.

Limited Run Games is famous for releasing physical versions of games that are usually only available digitally and during E3 this year it unveiled several upcoming releases, such as a bundle of all five Shantae games and a couple of retro Castlevania titles.

But in what is quite possibly a contender for the weirdest announcement to come out of E3 2021, one of its planned re-releases is Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties. If you’ve never heard of it, it is considered one of the worst video games ever made.

Initially a North American only PC game from 1993 (it also later released for the 3DO console in 1994), it is essentially a visual novel/dating sim. But instead of supplanting yourself as the main character to romance cute anime girls/boys, the goal is to get the two leads, John and Jane, together by making choices during story scenes.

Much like the equally infamous Night Trap, it’s a full-motion video (FMV) game, essentially making it an interactive live action movie. Although that’s not exactly accurate. While the visuals were created using real-life actors, there’s no motion to speak of. The game is entirely comprised of still images, making it feel like you’re clicking through a PowerPoint slideshow.

This was but one of the criticisms it faced, alongside its poor voice acting and story which, judging by the Wikipedia synopsis, verges between nonsensical and just plain uncomfortable.

Given its reputation, the only reason Limited Run Games would even think of re-releasing this must purely be for laughs. As for why anyone would buy it, it would presumably be for the novelty of owning a copy and to experience it first-hand.

The game will be available physically and digitally at a later date. Curiously, it isn’t listed for either of the Xbox platforms, although it’s not like Microsoft is missing out.

Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties releases for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC.
