Breath Of The Wild 2 has a secret name that spoils what it’s about

Nintendo has confirmed that the next Zelda game is not really called Breath Of The Wild 2 but they’re worried its real name is a spoiler.

After first being announced two years ago the sequel to Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was finally shown again at the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct, albeit very briefly.

Nintendo confirmed a 2022 released date but what they didn’t do is reveal its true name, which is not Breath Of The Wild 2.

There is a reason for this though, that goes beyond Nintendo’s usual love of secrecy, and that’s because it gives away too much of what the game’s about.

That’s what Nintendo of America marketing manager Bill Trinen told IGN, saying, ‘You’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important’.

‘Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen.’

That has been true of games like Skyward Sword, which is the name of the major new weapon in the game, and Twilight Princess, which refers to one of the main new characters.

However, Breath Of The Wild isn’t a reference to anything in particular, just a vague evocation of the game’s open world environment.

The implication is that the sequel’s name will be much more specific, perhaps a reference to a character or event that kicks off the plot.

Or, like Ocarina Of Time and The Wind Waker, it could relate to a new item or power that’s vital to completing the game.

There’s already been much speculation about the new abilities seen in the E3 demo, which possibly include controlling time and seem to involve a new attachment, or perhaps prosthetic limb, for Link’s arm.

Whatever the name is it’s going to be impossible to guess at but at least we now know there’s a reason it’s being held back.
