Daniil Medvedev Joins Novak Djokovic in Mallorca Before Wimbledon Championships 2021

After crashing out of the 2021 French Open quarterfinals last week, Daniil Medvedev entered the Halle Open to start preparations for the grass-court swing. However, Medvedev suffered a setback at the Halle Open, losing to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 6-7, 3-6 in the opening round.

Playing his first grass-court match of the season, Medvedev started off with a commanding 5-2 lead in the first set, however, Struff clawed back into the contest and secured the biggest win of his career.

Originally, set to make its debut in 2020, the Mallorca Championships got canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic last year. Hence, this would be the inaugural edition of the ATP grass-court tournament held at Santa Ponsa, Spain

World No.2 has confirmed his participation in the singles draw and would be top-seeded at the event. In fact, the tournament’s official Twitter account uploaded a post to announce Medvedev’s wildcard entry at Mallorca.

Apart from the Russian tennis star, World No.5 Dominic Thiem, who suffered a first-round defeat at the French Open, has also accepted the wildcard into the Mallorca Championships.

Other top players including Pablo Carreno Busta, Casper Ruud, Karen Khachanov and Ugo Humbert would be part of the singles draw as well.

In addition, the 19-time Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic, would headline the Mallorca Championships as he has confirmed his participation in the doubles draw. Just three days back, the Serbian created history by becoming the first man to lift all Grand Slam trophies multiple times after clinching his second title at the French Open.

As for Medvedev, the upcoming warm-up tournament provides him with an opportunity to reset his game before the start of the Wimbledon Championships, beginning in less than two weeks.

Since his main draw debut at Wimbledon in 2017, Medvedev has never gone beyond the third round at the All England Club.
