Loki: Could riveting fan theory about Old Man Loki explain Richard E Grant’s mysterious role?
Warning: spoilers ahead for episode 2 of Loki.
Two episodes into Marvel series Loki on Disney Plus, speculation is rife as to where the mind-boggling Tom Hiddleston show will lead.
At the end of episode two, Sophia Di Martino made her highly-anticipated arrival in the MCU, seemingly confirming Lady Loki as the rogue variant who has been attacking and killing agents from the TVA (Time Variance Authority).
However, fans still have no idea who Richard E Grant will be playing in the show… although there are some who believe he will be uncovered as another version of the God of Mischief, known as Old Man Loki.
One fan theory shared on Reddit explores how Old Man Loki could have a hand in all of the chaos that has plagued the TVA so far.
It also puts forward the idea of a major Loki clash at the end of the series, which – if it actually happens – could result in one of the most spectacular sequences in the MCU.
One of the many theories surrounding Loki is that Marvel comic book character Kang the Conqueror – who’s set to be portrayed by Jonathan Majors in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – will turn out to be the big baddie of the show as the time-travelling entity in charge of the TVA.
However, the Reddit user behind the Old Man Loki theory, who goes by the handle 408ReqstTimeout, reckons it’s actually the elderly version of the trickster calling the shots.
‘I think the person behind the TVA isn’t actually Kang, but Old Man Loki. To explain. I think he is a variant Loki from a long time ago who was arrested by the TVA, who somehow managed to actually take it over, and that he has mind wiped the workers there (who, by other people’s theory are variants themselves). This is another WandaVision type of mind-trip, where the people are unaware of what’s happening to them,’ they wrote.
So, Old Man Loki could be another variant Loki who’s breached the timeline, who – rather than be persecuted by the organisation – was able to overthrow those in charge.
The Reddit user continued, explaining that this would ‘explain his motivation for targeting other Lokis in particular’, as he would be aware that ‘they are the only ones who can stop him from his ultimate plan of defeating the Time Keepers’.
So how could it all end? With a massive Loki showdown, of course.
‘I think the crux of the show will end up being all the variant Lokis teaming up to defeat old man Loki, led by our Loki and Randy (Lady Loki),’ they said.
We’ve all seen how skilled Loki is in combat, so just imagine a battle full of variant Lokis flipping daggers, running circles around each other and trying to outsmart one another with wily tricks.
We request this scenario immediately.
Loki returns on Wednesday and is available to watch on Disney Plus.
