Tyson Fury Rules Out a Switch to MMA – ‘I’m a Stand-Up Fighting Man’

Tyson Fury is arguably one of the best heavyweights in the world right now. The undefeated fighter holds the WBC belt and has proven his superiority with ease on multiple occasions. However, he has now made a big announcement about his future.

‘The Gypsy King’ took over the heavyweight division with such ease that some fans called for a switch to MMA. This intensified when Fury posted a video where he trained using the UFC’s 4-ounce gloves and his training with former UFC fighter Nick Diaz. However, the Englishman has put all those rumors to bed once and for all.

The 30-0-1 boxer spoke to talkSPORT on YouTube and said, “No, I’ve got no real interest in grappling up and down on the floor and all that sort of stuff, I’m a stand-up fighting man, I don’t wrestle up and down and grab each other’s arms and sit on each other and all that.”

Thus, this comment from Fury showed his honest opinion on grappling. Clearly, Fury feels it is not ‘real fighting.’ He then confirmed his decision and said, “I like to stand up and fight, so would I ever compete as an MMA fighter? Hell no!”

Tyson Fury does not rule out a move to cage fighting

‘The Gypsy King’s words explained why he would never consider a switch to MMA. Therefore, this should put to bed any rumors of seeing Fury in an octagon. However, he did not rule out a change of sport.

The WBC heavyweight champion said, “Would I compete with small gloves on in a cage in a fight? Yes. But no gripping and grappling. The noble art of standing up and fighting, what men have been doing for centuries; I don’t see any noble science in wrestling up and down the floor.”

Thus, this statement revealed he is open to fighting in a cage with smaller gloves. Something he grew up in as a gypsy. However, it is the grappling and wrestling that has turned him away from a switch to MMA.

Therefore, we could see Tyson Fury switch sports if he conquers the heavyweight division with ease. However, given the excitement in boxing’s heavyweight division, it is unlikely that we will see ‘The Gypsy King’ in a cage.
