WATCH: Bianca Andreescu Breaks Down After Fans’ Special Gesture Following WTA Berlin R2 Loss

The 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu did not see a pleasant result on the court on her 21st birthday. In the second round of WTA Berlin 2021, she lost in two relatively close sets, 7-6(2), 7-5. It was 31-year-old Frenchwoman Alize Cornet who bettered the Canadian in two hours and five minutes.

As a No.3 seed in Berlin, Andreescu had received a bye, and so was playing her opening match against Cornet. Notably, it was her first career WTA Tour level main draw appearance on grass.

Moreover, her last main draw match on grass was in Wimbledon 2017, where she also lost in her first match. Following year, she failed to qualify for the Championships and since had never stepped on the grass.

Bianca Andreescu breaks down after WTA Berlin 2021 loss

Without a doubt, Andreescu must have entered the court with thoughts about attaining her WTA-level main draw win on grass. Thus, the weight of the loss against Cornet must be equally heavy on her.

However, the young Canadian fought valiantly as usual in the Steffi Graf Stadium. But it was the double fault errors in the end that sealed her fate in Berlin.

Consequently, Andreescu broke down as she sat on her chair after losing the match. Usually, she might have rushed off the court but not on her 21st birthday.

Moreover, fans and the announcer sang her Happy Birthday song. And although she was discouraged, she regrouped herself and gave her appreciation.

Before Berlin, Andreescu also crashed out in the opening round at French Open 2021. Hence, the pressure to win would also be piling up on her.

Next target for Andreescu: Wimbledon Championships 2021

From here on, the Canadian would only have the Wimbledon Championships 2021 in her sight. Hopefully, she might get her first win in the biggest grass-court tournament.

But given her fewer match reps, her off-rhythm performances are understandable. As Bianca spends more time on the court, her fluency would also return.

For now, the Canadian has to take a short break and return to training for the third Grand Slam of the year. Whatever the outcome that might come in Wimbledon would strongly impact her confidence.

All in all, Andreescu is one of the most promising young players on the WTA Tour. And fans do hope that she finds her desired rhythm soon.
